Senior Ecologist

JOB TITLE: Senior Ecologist

We have a career opportunity for a Senior Ecologist who will contribute as key member of our Environment Division in Dublin.
The successful candidate will assist in the delivery and management of projects for key public and private sector clients in Ireland.

The Role

· Preparation of Ecological Impact Assessments and Appropriate Assessment Reports (AA, NIS, NIR) on the likely impacts of proposed plans/ projects covering a range of sectors including water, transport, waste, energy and land use
· Site surveys / assessments and specialist ecological surveys and monitoring as and when required (e.g. badgers, otters, bats, ornithology, habitat restoration / rehabilitation, woodland management planning etc.)
· Scientific analysis of ecological data to support ecological assessments
· Consultation with relevant stakeholders including: government departments, planning authorities, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Inland Fisheries Ireland, and other regulatory bodies
· Project management of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment processes including coordination of specialist inputs, liaison with stakeholders, public consultation and compilation of statutory documentation
· Presentation of ecological assessments at Oral Hearing
· Integration with multi-disciplinary teams focussed on creating solutions. This will include working with internal RPS departments, our clients and other third parties such as engineers, architects, planners, environmental consultants, hydrologists, archaeologists, landscape architects etc.
· Management of resourcing and budgeting on projects including billing of clients
· Business development and reporting to senior management and directors

The Candidate will ideally have

· An honours ecology degree, or a related biological/environmental science subject with an ecological component
· A minimum five years’ employment experience in ecological consultancy
· Membership of CIEEM or working towards membership of CIEEM
· A broad range of previous relevant work experience in a professional consultancy or relevant NGO, academic setting or similar
· Excellent field skills with demonstrated field survey experience in ecology e.g. habitat classification (Fossitt), badger, otter , bat, bird and invasive species surveys
· Knowledge of relevant Irish and European legislation e.g. Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, EIA Directive, Birds and Natural Habitats Regulations
· Experience in compiling Appropriate Assessment documentation, including NIS/NIRs, as per Article 6 of the Habitats Directive
· Experience in compiling Ecological Impact Assessment reports on the likely impacts of proposed developments, and recommending appropriate mitigation measures
· Excellent report writing skills
· Demonstrable ability to manage a varied ecological workload
· Full Clean Driving Licence

Desirable

· A postgraduate qualification in a relevant ecological discipline
· A specialism in one field of ecology
· Experience of licensable activities/surveys for protected species such as bat, badger or otter
· Experience working in the role of Ecological Clerk of Works
· Experience as expert Witness
· Experience utilising GIS systems e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS and or others
