Senior Consultant - Water Management

Profile
Joining as a graduate in 2001, I have been able to see many aspects of consultancy within RPS. Starting with environmental and water soil management over the years I moved towards water management in which I have developed as an experienced senior consultant at RPS Leerdam. The open structure of the organisation, encouragement to take on responsibility and excellent client base has allowed me to achieve this.

Variety of Projects
My consultancy work extends from flood risk assessments, drainage assessments, modelling (1D and 2D), geotechnical assessments and rural planning. Examples of projects I am involved in includes:
  • Flood Risks and Safety in the Netherlands (Floris) - The Flood Risks and Safety in the Netherlands (Floris) Project was initiated in 2001 at the request of the State Secretary of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. The purpose of the Floris project is to gain an understanding of the consequences and the probability of flooding in the Netherlands. The project was conducted by the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Institute of the Netherlands Public Works Department (Rijkswaterstaat), in close cooperation with the Water Boards and Provinces. The Floris Project has resulted in the further development and application of a new method which can be used to determine the consequences of flooding. I have executed detailed calculations of the stream velocities and water levels, number of victims and economic losses resulting from various flooding scenarios for three dike rings, using 2D modelling.
  • River rehabilitation in Brabant, Water Board De Dommel - The water board has made policy on the rehabilitation of her streams and rivers that were canalised in the 1950s and 1960s in favour of the agriculture. Important aspects of this rehabilitation are meandering, smaller dimensions and removing weirs. These interventions affect the discharge pattern of the streams and rivers, but the extent of the effects however is unknown. I have performed a research project to get more insight in these effects. This research project involves 2D modelling of three small river catchments and a detailed analysis of the catchments hydrology.
  • Bank Erosion Loonse Vaart, Water Board Aa en Maas - Along the Loonse Vaart, a significant water supply channel during summertime, the banks are strongly affected by erosion as a result of the occurring soil types and strong variations in stream velocity and water levels. I advised the water board on the possible causes of the erosion and on sustainable solutions to avoid further erosion in the future. The project involves 1D modelling, geotechnical research and a communication process with both the water board and the involved land owners.
Why choose RPS?
Prospective water management consultants should chose RPS because of:
  • Diversity in project type
  • Exposure to all facets of water management
  • Skilled and motivated colleagues
  • Excellent promotion opportunities
  • Exposure to linked areas of expertise within the group, e.g. civil engineering, rural planning, soil & environment.
